Painted Hills, rock piles, and prehistoric kitty cats, all in the last installment of The Deep Now.

A car pulled up to the Painted Hills, stopping at the vista above. The hills rose up from the ground below in ochre and blood red and charcoal, layered stripes like jets of spray paint, growing wide and thin, great streaks of ancient color that ran layer upon layer along a series of rolling slopes, phantasmagoric hills that had existed for nearly 30 million years. Two people climbed out of the car, ambled over to glance at the hills, and, after a minute, got back in the car and left.
