
Originally a native of Hannover, Julian is currently professor of German and the director of the German Studies Program in Berlin, Germany at Clark College. Julian has a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature and some of his academic interests are world literature, philosophy, modernist aesthetics, contemporary theory, the Weimar Republic, and advertisement and popular culture.
Other interests include a passion for travel and traditional, large format, black and white photography with a particular emphasis on portraiture. His camera of choice is a 4x5 Linhof Technika III from 1952 with an assortment of vintage lenses. He develops all of his silver gelatin prints on fiber paper in his own darkroom.
Julian lives on Vancouver, Washington but often makes the trip over the river for photographic projects in the Portland area.
